Congressman Says Budget Negotiations are “Moving in the Right Direction”

The chair of the House Appropriations Committee said the amount of farmer aid is a hurdle.

Representative Tom Cole of Oklahoma, the chair of the House Appropriations Committee, believes that the “differences are narrowing” between negotiators working to pass a government funding extension before Friday.

“It’s both between the House and the Senate and Republicans and Democrats. So, they’re both institutional differences, and there are partisan differences,” Congressman Cole said. But he added, “There are a lot fewer of them than there were 24 hours ago,” and that discussions are “moving in the right direction.”

One of the last sticking points is financial aid for farmers. Members of both parties had hoped to finalize the language of the stopgap spending bill last Friday, but disagreements over the amount of farmer aid prevented that finalization. Representative Cole acknowledged that the issue remains a “substantial” factor in talks.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Representative Cole and other legislators bargaining on the continuing resolution.
  • For wisdom for members of both chambers as they seek to keep the government funded.
